How to choose a good short haircut for a girl?

I want to try something short, I am a 14 years old … can not fall off too away by otherwise is wrong, I have good / thinish hair. It is mostly straight but has a slight wave to it, when you pull into a ponytail some shorter pieces get all curly / frizzy, but it looks bad if it gels, it then shows my (semi-large) front too. My hair is slightly layered but to shoulder at this time. I want something different. Any good evidence to help find what is good or your own advice? THANK YOU!
