Short Hair Straightening Tips

I need some tips on straightening my hair?
I just had my hair cut so that it’s a little shorter than shoulder length so it will be more managable in the dorms. But the thing is that my hair was so long before that I’ve never straightened on my own. Now, I have to learn how.
I can do the front and sides just fine but I get frustrated because I can’t go as fast as I’d like. And I have trouble doing the back because I’m afraid of burning myself and I can’t see what I’m doing.
How do I get it stick straight? How do I do it quicker? How do I straighten the back? Please help me!
